Why study Music?
Studying music in adolescence literally changes the brain for the student for the better. Music is the only activity students do during their day that is actively activating both hemispheres of the brain. Music helps to build the pathways that connect the two sides of the brain and specifically impact memory, language acquisition, comprehension and listening skills. By the time a student leaves my classroom, the parts of the brain involved in the aforementioned skills will actually have more gray matter than students who do not study an instrument. Studying an instrument during adolescence can actually change your student's brain to make them more successful in school. Music is also good for social and emotional health and learning for students. Music has been proven to be an effective treatment for depression and other mental health issues. This is also the only class of the day where the work a student does truly impacts the rest of the group. Students learn how to collaborate and hold themselves and each other accountable in a healthy way to accomplish playing in a group. For more info click here.
